So tonight Amanda and I watched a special on magician David Blaine. This special has been around for a while as I’ve seen it a couple times. Anyway, in this special, David basically is on the street in different cities doing his tricks. He just walks up to a group of folks and does some of the most amazing stuff (card tricks, mind illusions, etc) that you’ve ever seen.
The best part for me though isn’t watching his tricks, it’s watching the peoples reactions. They are so amazed. Many of them just start laughing. Some fall down and some just take off running around screaming. Their reactions are so dramatic that Amanda and I were laughing, exclaiming with them. Joining them in their amazement.
What are these people going to do after witnessing Blaine’s magic? Go and tell their friends, family, anyone who will listen of course. Tell them about this guy who came up to them on the street and blew their minds with the most amazing tricks. They’ll recount their experience with passion and excitement. They’ll say things like, “You won’t believe this!” and “It was AMAZING”!
As I considered this, I couldn’t help but think about marketing. I am a marketer at heart. Love thinking about how people will react to advertising and messaging. The way people will describe Blaine’s magic is the same way that I want them to describe a marketing campaign I’m involved with. Basically, what you do should move people. It should move people in a way that they will go and tell others.
If you have a product, message, organization, idea that you want to tell others about. Don’t just “run an ad”. Make your messaging memorable. Take the time to really think through this. It does not cost more money to write creative messaging. It just takes some time to sit back and think about your customer and what will make them react.
How is your messaging today? What are you doing with it that is getting people to talk to others about you?
